Flip Video is also a compact digital camera...Surprise For Many!

Chances are you or someone you know owns a Flip Video recording device.  These are super handy little compact video recorders that are smallerl than most digital cameras let alone video cameras.  Many of you who have a Flip may not know this but your Flip Video has the ability to copy any video frame and save it as a single digital image just like your digital camera.  The image quality is surprisingly good especially considering the Flip was not really designed as a digital camera but a digital video recorder.

Each of the photos below were taken using the SNAP feature that is built within the Flip software that comes with the Flip Ultra F260 model.  I did NOT retouch any of the photos and they are exactly how they were when SNAPPED them from the Flip.  Obviously we could use PhotoShop or an editing software and tweak them a bit but I wanted you to see them "as is".  If you are on an appointment and you forgot your camera you can always pull out your Flip and shoot some video footage and SNAP the image when you get home.

I would love to hear from those of you are surprised that your Flip Video can also do digital photos.

A friend just told me about this Flip "camera"...she heard about it at Celebration in Hawaii.

Hi Sam - I didn't realize we could pull individual photos from Flip videos. With a little minor editing, it looks like the quality would be fine for the web or MLS.

Pat - That may have come from the session that Mark Porter headed up on Technology at Sellabration.  The Flip is a neat piece of technology that has almost limitless uses .

John - I agree that with some very minor tweaking the Flip photos would be great for the web and MLS.  The quality is much better than I would have expected

Sam,

I am not thrilled with Flip. Small, but still there are now 3CCD video cameras quite affordable but with the capability to record professinal quality videos. The technology is unbelievable. Of course, you pay for it, but the quality is not even close.

I use my flip video for virtual tours.  I knew we had the option to take stills out of the video, but have never tried to.

Great. For such a small camcorder, the quality of the picture is super. It is actually usable. I wish my cellphone can take pictures close to this quality.

Thanks Sam for the post.  I have been wanting to check out the flip video.  This is good information to know.

My Flip died. After working with customer service to make sure, they told us we were SOL. After the 90 day warranty it just becomes an expensive disposable. I'm pretty disappointed.

Geordie, Do you know what specifically happened to you FLIP?  The reason I am asking is because it could be possible to get the new software update which may wake up your FLIP.  You are only the second person I have heard of that has had a problem with their device.  Is your Flip the F260 Ultra?

Posted by Sam Miller, Knox County Ohio Real Estate Specialist (RE/MAX Stars Realty) over 11 years ago

yes, it is the F260 ultra. I am looking into the software update. Strange that customer support couldn't pass along that gem.  They seemed more interested in telling us that we were not covered by the warranty and out of luck.

Thanks Sam! The software update did the trick! It's great to be able to go to the AR community when we have a problem that can be solved. It's too bad that companies aren't smart enough to hire staff that can help their customers in the same way that we help each other.

Geordie,  I am happy the software update did the trick and brought your Flip back to life.  You are right about the AR community being very willing to help each other.  There have been many times I have reached out for a recommendation and within minutes got two or three members offering to help me.  That gave me a very good feeling!

Update:  The New FLIP HD also has the SNAP digital photo capture feature.

The Flip is barely available around here right now and I've seen them going for around seventy bucks in the pre black friday flyers, so I am going to have to get one .

Sam,

Not bad for a picture from a flip. I have a earlier model flip(got in May 08) but do not know if I can snap a picture out of the videos I shoot.

great post I keep hearing about this vidio camera. Maybe it's time to look into one.

I had no idea!  I purchased this Flip camera last summer and I haven't used it yet!  LOL!  Now, I will have to take it with me tomorrow and try this out!  Thanks for the tip!

It's a Good Life!

Terry, If the Flip model is the F260 or the Meno that is a great deal.

Mike, The snap feature I am describing is in my software.  If you plug your Flip into your USB on your computer and then open the software and start playing it the Snap feature should be on the far left.

Jerome, Depending on your budget you may even want to look at the newest model which is the Flip HD.  I hear they are under $230 or less and the resolution is supposed to be even better than the F260 that I have.

Frances, Get that Flip out and have some fun with it.  Once you start you won't be able to stop...they are pretty fun.

Happy Selling!

Hi Sam,

Are you using the FLIP for your tips and listings on YouTube?

How do you put the text, ie website, on the screen?

I had lunch with Kevin H last week.  He said he was on the phone with you as he walked in the restaurant.  We found out we both love playing texas hold em.

To your success,  Dan

Dan,

I am using the Flip for some of my videos but mainly I am using TourFactory which is an upload from my virtual tour software and we also do the text in TourFactory.  I have iMovie on my Mac and use it a bunch and that is generally when I use either my Flip or my iSight camera that is built into my Macbook Pro laptop.

Kevin is a ton of fun and he has a very sharp business mind so hanging with him does us both some good.

Happy Selling My Friend!

So does the Vado HD and the lens angle is about 50% wider. Check out my blog comparing the two.
