Text Message Contact Option From Your Online Real Estate Listings

We live in a society that wants instant information and those who provide this type of service are able to create a sincere advantage over others who either can't or won't provide this level of service.

An idea I have been kicking around is building a text message contact template within each of my listing web pages so that a buyer can instantly contact me via a text message that is 160 characters or less.  I believe there is strong value in using this type of service and I have a feeling the buying public would love the instant response feature so the real question is has anyone done this yet and if so can you share with us your success?

If you have already created something like this I am sure that many AR members would love to see what you have done so please post a link to the specific pages on your website.  Thanks in advance!

I have a feeling based on the lack of response that this idea is so new that most agents hadn't even considered this as a viable option to communicate with potential customers and clients.  I would love to hear your ideas about this concept.

I think it is a great idea.  I think an easier way to do it without building a template is to just insert something in your listing to say "for a fast way to get information on this listing, please text me at 111-123-4567."  However, I don't think I would know where to start on building a template.  :)

I have a Blackberry with qwerty keyboard so I don't mind texting at all if that is the way my Client wants to communicate.

Rick - That idea would certainly work and I do believe that making it easy and quick for clients to get contact us will be very beneficial especially as the market tightens up further.

I believe the text template might be more effective than just putting a text message number on the listing because they can send the text from their computer by simply dropping in some text (contact info and basic question and I get the message instantly.  I am totally with you that if you can't get someone to design or update your current listing template having your text contact information is FAR better than not having it there at all (especially when dealing with our younger consumers).  The challenge with some folks is that many don't have the TREO, Blackberry, Q and they have a traditional keyboard which is a pain.  The computer form gets it straight to me and you can place a symbol into the default message coming from the computer so that you can track where it is from.  An example would be in the message box a * could be the first character that is defaulted...this would tell you the text message is coming from your listing website.

I am sure there are tons of spins we could create off of this concept.

Rick, Thanks again for commenting.

Sam,

I just recently read a blog by Chris Brubaker that was about Marketing with Text Messages.  To read about it click here.  I think you & Chris are onto something!!!

Merry Christmas to you and your family!!

Rick - Thanks for the link and I agree that the concept will certainly work.

I like the idea and would like to understand it a little better to be sure I have it right.  I also like having a link from my email to my phone so I know when someone did request information.  Also, I did click on Rick Turner's link and it did not work for me.

This sounds like something www.jott.com  and www.callwave.com where you can either call or text message someone to their cell phone.  I use it for phone messages that come to me in text format.  Is this the same?  Are these the same or did I miss the point?

Good post and idea.

Rosemary - The concept in to provide an alternative way to contact you other than e-mail or a phone number.  There would simply be a box with a title that "Instant Answers For Your Real Estate Questions by Text Message" and below it there would be a 160 character box where they would type in their question.

Have a Merry Christmas

Sam- great idea.....HARD to believe that someone doesn't have this covered already! Text messaging has been around forever and gets more popular annually and is a HUGE part of how many agents do business. I sure hope we find someone who can (or has) this template set up.

Sam I see and it does sound like a great idea.  Text messaging is contagious and useful to the business for immediate responses.  Please share the template when you get it created!

Jim - We have it in the works now and we are using a box similar to the box I am typing in but it only allows 160 characters and it will work exactly like an e-mail form except that instead of it coming to my e-mail address it will come to my text message address.

Rosemary - I will be happy to share the text message box once it is 100% completed and working.  My biggest fear once I post it on Active Rain is members will start text messaging me accidently when they are trying to test it out (so I am going to put some detailed instructions on the blog post when I do it).

Sam- do you intend this to be a widget for active rain....or for your personal website?? Dying to see how this turns out!
Posted by Jim Ludes, Grundy/Will County, IL REALTOR (RE/MAX Top Properties) about 12 years ago
Jim, I am working on this for my personal website only and no widget at this time.

I do Real Estate website development and can provide this kind of service if anyone is interested and would like this sort of script implemented on your site.

I'd love to hear if anyone finds a widget that does this.

Hi There

I just set up a program to text my info to the buyers who drive by my listings, I signed up with cellsigns.com, there are plenty of other companies doing this now, I like the signs that come with the program and the staff is really helpful

Sam - Please let us know when you post it.

Sam

Just remember to get your plan upgraded to unlimited text messages, you do have to pay for text messages sent to you.

Posted by Terry Lynch (LAR Notary and Closing Services) about 12 years ago

Retta, I saw a few of those services at NAR and it appeared to work similar to how the IVR system worked but with text messge instead of voice and fax.  Neat technology for sure.  I am interested if the system collects the cell phone number when it sends the text?

Rosemary, We are working with our web designer this coming Friday and lay it out and do some brief testing so within a month or less we should have it set up and working...so look for an update before February 1st as my goal.

Terry, I have unlimited text messaging and I also have a text message e-mail account like most other cell phone users so we can program the system to either use a cell number or a text e-mail account.  This topic is going to get exciting for sure.

Posted by Sam Miller, Knox County Ohio Real Estate Specialist (RE/MAX Stars Realty) about 12 years ago

Sam, an interesting idea. I would like to understand better the details of how it works. By the way just general PC to text message sending can be done to any carrier by using the email address

phonenumber@teleflip.com

 e.g.   2125551212@teleflip.com

The age 15 to 30 crowd does a lot of text messaging. Older folks DON'T. Something also to keep in mind.

Hi Gary, The consumer will not need to know how to text message me and they will not even need a cell phone.  They simply need to be able to type a few words of text into my website form and hit the contact button and the website will do the texting automatically.
Posted by Sam Miller, Knox County Ohio Real Estate Specialist (RE/MAX Stars Realty) about 12 years ago

If enough folks are interested in this, I can create a low-cost form/script solution you insert on your web page so your clients can send a text message to you - and they don't need to know how to text message.

While this is an old blog post it is a great idea!

Yes it is an old post but the idea is great.  In fact, I have it on my blog now.  I use google voice and I link the call to action to my google voice logo and it can be used to call me or text me.

Joe - I posted this way back in 2007 and I did utilize a text message system with great success but the product provider went away and merged efforts with a growing franchise.

Rosemary - Your idea of utilizing "Google Voice" merged with a texting feature is a creative idea!
